Harriet Ellan Miers (born August 10, 1945) is an American lawyer, and former       
White House Counsel. On January 4, 2007, she submitted her resignation from the   
position of White House Counsel, effective January 31.                             
                                                                                   
President George W. Bush nominated her on October 3, 2005 for Associate Justice   
of the U.S. Supreme Court to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. The nomination   
was met with opposition from conservative groups and others unhappy with her       
credentials, and on October 27, President Bush withdrew her nomination, saying     
Miers had asked him to do so.
