Aruna Sairam was born in a Tamil family with a deep love for music. Her first teacher in the art of Carnatic music was her mother, Smt. Rajalakshmi Sethuraman. Her father was a true connoisseur of music and her house often served as a favoriteguest home for the greatest musicians and dancers of India like Smt. T. Balasarastwati, the Khanyal singer Ustad Amir Khan and Smt. M. S. Subbhalakshmi. It was in such an environment that she met Sangit Kalanidhi Smt. T. Brinda, who taught her Carnatic music for several years.
