The present Gharanas like Gwalior , Agra and Mallik Gharana of Bihar have provided a major contribution in the singing of Dhrupad. Ramchatur Mallik was famous for ‘Khandar’ singing, i.e. singer-dominated singing.

       

Ramchatur Mallik was born in 1906 at amta in Darbhaga sistrict of Bihar . His education of Dhrupad singing was given by his father Pandit Rajit Ram Mallik and uncle Kshitij Mallik. Later, he was also taught by famous /Sitar player Pndit Rameshwar Pathak. There was no match of his traditional Dhrupad singing. He had all the ingredients of Dhrupad singing like uniformity stability in his voice. He had command over tune (Swar) and Taal and his pronunciations was fantasic.

       

In 1953, he was given fellwship from the Sangeet Academy of Bihar. In 1970, he was honoured with the Padma Shri and Sangeet Natak Academy award. He was given the title of Sur Vilas in 1977. He got Tansen award from the Mahdhya Pradesh government in 1981. He died on January 11, 1990.
