F. Sherwood Rowland is the Donald Bren Research Professor at the University of
California, Irvine, where he founded the chemistry department in 1964. He shared
the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995 with Paul Crutzen and Mario Molina for work
"in atmospheric chemistry, particularly concerning the formation and
decomposition of ozone." Rowland received the Japan Prize in Environmental
Science and Technology in 1989 and has received numerous other awards and
honorary degrees. He has been a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences
since 1978 and served as its foreign secretary from 1994 to 2002. He has
lectured in more than 50 countries and in 1995 was the founding chairman of the
InterAcademy Panel. He also served as president and chairman of the board of the
American Association for the Advancement of Science and is an elected foreign
member of the Royal Society, the world's oldest scientific academy in continuous
existence. Rowland has published more than 400 research articles in the fields
of atmospheric chemistry, radiochemistry and chemical kinetics. He earned both a
master's degree and Ph.D. at the University of Chicago.
