Guru Nanak was the founder of the Sikh religion. He was born on April 15,1469, in Talwandi village of Punjab. He was born to a simple Hindu family. His father, Sri Kaliyan Das Mehta (KaluMehta), was an accountant.

From an early age, Guru Nanak made friend’s with both Hindu and Muslim children and was very inquisitive about the meaning of life. At the age of six, he was sent to the village school for studying Hindi and mathematics. Then he studied Muslim literature, Persian and Arabic. As a young man herding the family cattle, Guru Nanak would spend long hours absorbed in meditation and in religious discussions with Muslim and Hindu holy men. Later he was married.

One day Guru Nanak had holy communion with God. Enlightened, he started travelling with friend Mardana spreading the message of God. People listened to him and became his disciples. Guru Nanak successfully challenged and questioned the existing religious tenets and laid the foundations of Sikhism.
