Farooq Abdullah is a famous political leader of Jammu and Kashmir. His father Sheikh Abdullah was a nationalist leader and Chief Minister of the state. Farooq became President of the National Conference in 1981 and later became the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in 1984, his government was dismissed and a pro-Congress government was established.

       

Farooq returned to power in 1987 after the polls. He forged an alliance with the Congress. But there were allegations of rigging in the polls. There was resentment among the people of the state. The problem of terrorism raised its ugly head in the state. There was unemployment among the youth. Unfortunately, Farooq was unable to control the situation. Thousands of Hindus left the valley. President’s rule was imposed in the state. Jagmohan was appointed as the Governor of the state. In 1996, Farooq again became the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
