G. KARUPPIAH MOOPANAR

G. Karuppiah Moopanar was a great political leader. He had formed the Tamil Maanila Congress, but remained a congressman at heart. He was a staunch nationalist and an uncompromisingly secular leader. He belonged to the rare breed of political leaders, who despite their popular appeal and stature, did not hanker after power and even shunned official positions.

Moopanar was born on August 19, 1931 at Kabisthalam village in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. Moopanar became the President of the Thanjavur district Congress Committee in 1965. When the Congress split in 1969, he continued with Kamaraj. After Kamaraj’s death, the two Congress factions merged and Moopanar was appointed the President of the unified TNCC. In 1996, he parted ways, with the Congress protesting against Congress President P.V. Narasimha Rao’s decision to align with the A.I.A.D.M.K. He formed the Tamil Maanila Congress. After Moopanar’s death, his son G.K. Vasan was elected as the TMC President.
