NEELAM SANJEVA REDDY
       

Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, the late President of India, was born on May 12,1913, at Illur in the Anantpur district of Andhra Pradesh in an agricultural family. In 1929, he gave up his studies and joined the National Movement.

       

In 1937, Reddy was appointed the secretary of Andhra Provincial Congress Committee and later became the chairman of the All India Congress Committee. He played an invaluable role in bringing together the leaders of Telengana and Andhra which resulted in the formation of the new state of Andhra Pradesh in 1956. He became the first Chief Minister of the State.

       

As a Speaker, he conducted the proceedings of the Lower House of the Parliament with decency and decorum during the years 1967-1969. In 1977, he was again elected as the Lok Sabha member and unanimously chosen Speaker of the house. But he did not continue that position for long since he was elected unopposed as the President of the Indian Republic on July 25,1977. Sanjeeva Reddy passed away on June 1,1996.
