In 2003 he was selected as best Swedish player of the year, winning Guldbollen.

In 2005 he was named by Manchester City F.C. manager Stuart Pearce as “the best player in England” following a series of outstanding displays under his under fire coach David O’Leary. His aerial presence is second only to Sylvain Distin, while his attacking flair is often overestimated. Although he is still a goal scoring virgin, O’Leary has stuck by his central defender, rushing him forward for set pieces.
